The Official Scoop on Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser

What We Know Now About Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser

What is Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser?

Disney is working on a new Star Wars-themed luxury resort. What makes this resort unique from all of the others is that guests will be completely immersed in the story, interacting with the characters and really stepping into the Star Wars universe.

Guests become passengers aboard the Halcyon, a starship in the Star Wars universe, and become a part of the story, engaging and interacting with characters in a story that takes place over the duration of their two day, two-night stay.

We are working on our most experiential concept ever. Bob Chapek, Chairman, Walt Disney Parks & Resorts (July 15, 2017)
What does Star Wars "immersion" mean?

Here's what we know currently:

  • Guests will check in for a 2-night, 2 day stay at Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser where the story will unfold over those days.
  • Guests will all board together and disembark together, like a cruise ship experience.
  • Guests will "leave earth" via a Launch Pod, be briefed during a muster drill about what they will see and experience, and be transported to the Halcyon starship that will be their home to navigate the galaxy.
  • During the voyage, guests will encounter characters, stories and adventures that unfold all around them.
  • Each guest will be an active citizen of the Star Wars realm and live in a way that reflects that universe. This includes dressing in Star Wars themed attire, if they so desire.
  • Every window will have a view of space.
Where will it be located?

It will be part of Walt Disney World Parks and Resorts in Orlando, Florida. It will be located on the south side of Disney's Hollywood Studios, east of World Drive.

Will it be like other Disney hotels?

Disney is no stranger to creating themed resort experiences, such as their Aulani hotel in Hawaii.

However, this project is to be completely immersive, meaning guests are considered characters in a plot and are invited to act those roles during their time at the hotel.

It will also be different because there is no flexibility in how long guests can remain in the resort. Like a cruise ship, the vacation is a set two-night, two-day stay during which an interactive story will play out.

When will Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser be completed?

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is scheduled to open in Spring 2022.

The year of the Star Wars hotel opening date has been officially announced, but not an exact date.

If you can't wait until Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser opens up, the Star Wars Day at Sea is an immersive intergalactic experience aboard a cruise ship. Learn more about how you can interact with the characters and experience limited-time Star Wars shows and celebrations by reading our guide to Star Wars Disney Cruises.

What happens during a stay on the Star Wars hotel?

You will check in at a "terminal" at Disney World, where you will be transported with all other guests to the intergalactic starcruiser called the Halcyon.

Guests are asked to check in between 1pm and 4pm. Sounds like the last Launch Pod will leave by 4pm.

Travel to the Halcyon will take place via a Launch Pod, where you'll watch the real world disappear as you make the jump to hyperspace en route to the ship.

Each "launch pod" will be a heavily modified bus, where you'll never see the driver.

During a "muster", you'll be briefed on the experiences you're likely to have onboard the starship.

You'll enter the Halcyon via airlock and step into the main deck atrium. I expect this experience to feel similar to entering a Disney Cruise ship for the first time.

Upon arrival, you'll be introduced to characters from the Star Wars universe -- both new and old favorites -- including the captain of the star cruiser, the ship's mechanic, and a "a galactic superstar who can captivate an entire room with the crook of one jewel-encrusted purple Twi’lek finger."

This Twi'lek character will also be a star of a dining experience that will take place in the "Crown of Corellia Dining Room". (Corellia was home planet of Han Solo.)

The Halycon is expected to be a luxury starship and for the price, I would expect absolutely incredible service.

You'll check into your well-appointed cabin and enjoy "out of this world" dining.

All the while, you become part of a story that takes place over the full duration of your stay.

Interact with Star Wars Characters
It’s too early to say exactly how these interactions will go but we know you will run into a variety of famous Star Wars characters such as Kylo Ren, Rey and Chewbacca. Additionally, guests will meet new characters that will become part of the broader Star Wars universe.

Recent audition calls give us an indication of what kind of characters you'll meet. Excerpts taken from Disney's job site tell us...

CAPTAIN: Seeking a mature, commanding actor with strong improvisational abilities to portray the Halcyon’s Captain. She is a worldly Pantoran (40s-50s) with a rich, diverse history and dedication to her vocation. She is a strong and charismatic leader who has served as a well-respected ship commander for some time and demands the attention and focus of every room she walks into.

CRUISE DIRECTOR: Seeking an effervescent actor with strong improvisational abilities to portray the Halcyon’s Cruise Director. She is a human (30s) with the capacity to learn that life is about more than the fun of the moment, and draws inspiration from the efforts she sees being made to bring harmony and justice to the galaxy. A born cruise director who loves travel and adventure, she is a cheerful and harmonious people person.

SHIP MECHANIC: Seeking a friendly and engaging actor with strong improvisational abilities to portray the mechanic. A youthful (late teens-20s) human with big dreams, his enthusiasm sometimes outpaces his capabilities, and, as a result, he tries to present a braggadocios front to mask the vulnerability of being far from home.

THE FIXER: Seeking a confident and engaging actor with strong improvisational abilities to portray The Fixer. Character portrayed is a well-traveled, devil-may-care human (40s). A convincing and handsome schemer, he uses his charm to his advantage as he seeks out associates to enlist in his criminal enterprise. His calculated and conniving approach is an intellectual dance; a paso doble that leaves passengers wondering… was he the bull or the matador? Actors with sleight of hand tricks a plus and are encouraged to prepare a demonstration of abilities.

FIRST ORDER LIEUTENANT: Seeking a charismatic and engaging actor with strong improvisational abilities to portray the First Order Lieutenant. Character portrayed is human (40s) and working his way up the ladder. An ambitious officer of the First Order, the Lieutenant is new to his position of power, and is working hard not to let us know that. He doesn’t see a line between abusing and leveraging power.

SABER TRAINER
: Seeking warm and engaging athletic actors with improvisational abilities to serve as Saber Trainers. Character portrayed is in their 20’s-30’s. Patient and well-composed instructors, Saber Trainers serve as expert wielders of the lightsaber and he/she/they take cruisers through a physical demonstration. Prior sword/saber experience a plus as the role requires the ability to confidently brandish a lightsaber.

THE FIRST-TIME CRUISER: Seeking a youthful and friendly actor/guitarist/singer with strong improvisational acting abilities to portray The First-Time Cruiser. Character portrayed is a Togrutan (20s) who aspires to be more than the “alien next door”. This hopeless romantic is a friendly and earnest musician who happily serenades his fellow guests as he aspires to impress the Galactic Superstar. He is a strong rhythm guitarist with a happy go lucky, easy going musical style.  A struggling singer/songwriter looking for his big break. Vocal range low C to high A; Low tenor/high baritone.

GALACTIC SUPERSTAR: Seeking an actor/vocalist with strong improvisational abilities to portray our Galactic Superstar. Character portrayed is a Twi'lek (30s-40s) who commands respect and flame-roses at her feet. Operating in a legally-dubious world of galactic intrigue while fighting for her race’s integrity and freedom, she is also a phenomenally soulful singer who demands focus in every conversation and performance alike. Her vocal range is preferably that of a Mezzo Soprano and her musical style is a hybrid of neo-soul, jazzy, funk, colored by her extensive travel and experiences.

REY: (5’6”-5’8”) Seeking a dynamic and athletic actor with an athletic, slender build and strong improvisational abilities to portray Rey. Rey is a survivor, toughened by her life as a scavenger on the harsh desert planet of Jakku. Despite dismissing herself as a “no one”, she learns that her life is being shaped by the mysterious power of the force. Actors with prior experience or knowledge in stage combat, Wushu, martial arts or hand-to-hand are encouraged to attend.

KYLO REN: (6’0”-6’2”) Seeking a dynamic and athletic actor with improvisational abilities to portray Kylo Ren. A menacing Force-sensitive warrior, Kylo is driven by his connection to the dark side to achieve his ultimate goal of galactic domination. Actors with prior experience or knowledge in stage combat, Wushu, martial arts or hand-to-hand are encouraged to attend.

Activities
The Halcyon will “make a stop” at Black Spire Outpost on Batuu (aka Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge at Hollywood Studios). A transport that is operated by the Black Spire Outpost will take guests from the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser to Batuu via a shuttled piloted by Rex Droid V03A. This droid will be based out of Black Spire, not on the Halycon itself.

Prior to arriving at Batuu, events will have unfolded onboard the Halcyon that lead into the experiences that will take place on the planet. For example, riding Rise of the Resistance will take on special meaning your story. Further, on the ride Smuggler's Run, you'll steal Coaxium. However, before you arrive on Batuu, you'll learn who the buyer is of the Coaxium. Later, you'll deliver that Coaxium. In this way, all pieces of the story connect the Star Wars Hotel experience to the Galaxy's Edge experience seamlessly.

Additionally, you’ll be trained in the ways of the Force, learning how to wield a lightsaber successfully. And you can expect to visit the Bridge of the ship where you’ll learn how to navigate and/or defend the Halcyon in case of an attack.

Discover Secrets
You will be able to poke around the Halcyon and during the process you might discover "hidden spaces deep in the mechanics of the ship". I'm not sure yet what purpose these will have, but color me intrigued!

Choose Your Own Adventure
The choices you make during your stay will dictate additional events that transpire as your personal adventure goes along.

  • Do you wish to follow the First Order?
  • Become a Jedi in training?
  • Enroll to become a member of high galactic society?

Your Level of Immersion is Up to You
Guests are welcome to become characters as much as they like. Example, if you prefer to take a casual observer approach and enjoy the performances of other guests & Cast Members while wearing your regular clothes, no problem. If, however, you want to immerse yourself more deeply, you will be welcome to dress in costume, paint your face, and completely act the part of your character.

Dinner at Crown of Corellia Dining Room
Similar to a fine dining experience on a cruise ship, Halycon passengers will be treated to an extra-terrestrial dinner show in the evenings. Guests will eat and watch a performance on a stage, where performers (unknown yet if they are to be holograms or actual Cast Members in costume).

This dining room will be host to breakfast and lunch and will then transform in the evening into a "lavish multi-course menu of both otherworldly and familiar origins." Sounds like we're in for some interesting dining choices!

Create or Train Your Own Droid?
An R-series astromech droid is prominently featured in a recent Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser promotion poster, hinting that your stay might include up close and personal interaction with your own personal droid?

Hints?
In a recent video, Disney Imagineers share a few hints of what some of the guest experiences might be like. These include:

  • make allies
  • go on a scavenger hunt
  • meet a stowaway
  • ...or help someone become a stowaway
  • get someone thrown in the brig
  • ...or help someone break out of the brig
  • help someone smuggle some luggage onto the ship
How will you get to Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser?

Official permits clearly outline a designated area for shuttle parking. It is speculation at this point but these shuttles could be themed as transports in the Star Wars universe, keeping guests fully engulfed in the theme and storytelling experience.

There doesn't seem to be any obvious self-parking, so we're expecting valet parking to be the norm.

How many rooms will Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser have?

There will be 100 cabins and suites. Each will feature at least one window with a view of space.

Initial blueprints showed the first floor of the hotel having 34 "cabins", with two of these being labeled as "First Class" and seem to be twice the size of the standard room.

This is very very small compared to other Disney resorts that feature 2000 rooms or more.

If this is the case, reservations are going to be hard to come by and the price will likely be "out of this world."

Star Wars Hotel Address

What is the official Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser address?

The Star Wars Hotel address:

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Terminal
201 South Studio Drive
Bay Lake, Florida 32830

This location is adjacent to Disney's Hollywood Studios, as part of the Walt Disney World resort.

We've learned there will be easy movement between this Star Wars themed resort and Galaxy's Edge at Hollywood Studios. This transport will be provided by the Black Spire Outpost.

The aerial view below from Google Maps shows the location of the terminal, where we expect guests to board a launch pod. This transport will then take its passengers to the actual hotel site (shown in the red square below).

You can see in this image how close the starcruiser is to a back entrance to Star Wars Galaxy's Edge at Hollywood Studios.

Star Wars Hotel Name

What will the Star Wars Hotel be called?

The name of the Star Wars hotel was officially revealed at the D23 convention in August 2019.

The hotel will be called Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser.

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Rumors

How will holograms work at the Star Wars Hotel?

Disney has filed for patent called "Floating Image Display System."

This patent seems to be the basis for a hologram that hovers in the air.

The ramifications of this new technology are huge for theme parks and an immersive hotel experience, like the Star Wars hotel is expected to become.

Visitors could interact with "floating" virtual characters during their voyage through the Star Wars Galaxy.

Will there be special dinner show restaurant at Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser?

Concept art in the original plans for Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, gave indication there would be a special dining experience at the Star Wars Land.

Star Wars Hotel Dinner Show

Img: wdwnt.com. Screen capture from 2016 announcement of Galaxy's Edge.

There will be an immersive dinner show at the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser resort. This event will include meals and musical performances.

This makes sense, as dinner shows aboard Disney Cruise are a huge part of the entertainment.

For those unfamiliar, the cruise ship restaurants are decorated in a theme and elements of the room actually interact with the guests (ala Animator's Palate). Along with the dining, there is character-based entertainment.

In the immersive experience at the new hotel, such a restaurant is a logical step.

What language will they speak at Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser?

With the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, we get a little glimpse into the language that is likely to be spoken at the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser.

The Hollywood Studios attraction is set on the planet of Batuu.

The Batuuans speak a language similar to English with a few key phrases. See the full breakdown of the new Star Wars land language.

By adopting a new Star Wars language, the immersive experience takes deeper hold at the parks.

We fully expect this to continue -- and probably expand -- at Galactic Starcruiser.

BUILDING PERMIT: NOVEMBER 2018

In filing for building permits, the blueprints provided by Disney to local authorities give some new insights:

  1. Guests will arrive by shuttle to the hotel, probably from the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge land
  2. Blueprints call for a dining area with a "buffet," a courtyard, and a large area labeled "dojo." Perhaps this dojo is for Jedi training
  3. Star Wars themed rooms available to guests will consist of  cabins and 1st class cabins.

GUEST SURVEY: APRIL 2017

Disney surveyed guests in April 2017, asking their opinion about a Star Wars hotel luxury lodging experience.

From the questions that were included in that survey, here are the following rumors. Most are probably fairly realistic.

  • The basic experience will entail a 2-day story for guests to experience.
  • Guests will be completely immersed in a non-stop entertainment experience that is driven by a core story.
  • The Star Wars story will take place during a 2-night stay.
  • Guests will interact personally with performers acting as live Star Wars characters.
  • Programs will be set up for guests to participate in flight training, exploration of space, Jedi training, light saber jousting, and personalized secret missions.
  • Experiences will take place on a starship and a planet of the Star Wars universe.
  • Packages will include all meals during your stay, including buffet breakfasts, lunches, & signature evening dining
  • Dinner shows and exclusive entertainment will be offered as part of the experience.
  • Bookings will include exclusive park admission to the new Star Wars land, set to open at Walt Disney World in 2019
  • Also included will be Star Wars starship amenities such as pool, water garden, fitness center, on-board cantina, and robotic droid Butlers
